Living in Tahsis

At the head of an inlet, beyond the end of the pavement.

Living in Tahsis means a small community at the head of Tahsis Inlet on the west side of Vancouver Island, reached by a long road beyond Gold River. It is among the most remote communities on the Island that can be driven to, and the access is the first thing to understand about it.

Tahsis waterfront and surrounding Vancouver Island scenery

Tahsis is a remote west coast Vancouver Island village known for rugged scenery, fishing, and outdoor adventure.

What to know before you read further
  • Tahsis is reached from Gold River. The road beyond Gold River is long and partly unpaved, and it is the only land access3.
  • This is deep inlet country on the west side. Tahsis Inlet runs out toward Nootka Sound and the open Pacific.
  • There is a health centre, not a hospital. Hospital services mean travelling to Campbell River1.
  • Property costs are among the lowest anywhere on the Island. The remoteness is the reason, and it is the whole trade.
  • Boating and fishing are central. The inlet and the Sound beyond are the reason a great many people are here.
  • Services in the community are minimal. Basic supplies locally, with anything substantial a long drive away.

How Remote Is Remote

Tahsis is genuinely remote in a way that most places calling themselves remote are not. The road in is long, partly unpaved and the only one, and the nearest hospital is hours away. Everything else about the community follows from that, including why property here costs what it does.

When Tahsis Works

  • Genuine remoteness is the point rather than a drawback you are tolerating.
  • A boat and the inlet are central to why you are moving.
  • Very low property cost matters and you understand what produces it.
  • You are self sufficient about supplies, repairs and getting through a week.
  • You have driven the road in and seen the community outside summer.

When It Does Not

  • Any regular medical appointment schedule, because everything is hours away.
  • You have not driven the access road and are judging from photographs.
  • Reliable trades, deliveries and services at short notice are essential.
  • A resale market with depth matters to you.
  • Something smaller and simpler will be needed later, which is not available here.

Both lists say the same thing in different words. Tahsis is remote, it is cheap because of that, and the road is the fact everything else depends on.

The Road From Gold River

Access to Tahsis is by a long road from Gold River, partly unpaved and running through active forestry country3. It is the only land connection.

Anyone considering Tahsis should drive that road before doing anything else, in the season they would actually be using it. Vehicle wear, tyre condition, travel time and what happens if the road closes are all practical questions, and they matter more here than the house does.

The Parts of Tahsis

It is a small community and the differences are mostly about the water and the age of the housing.

Along the waterfront

Property on or near the inlet, with moorage and water access as the draw. Shoreline condition and servicing are the things to establish.

The village streets

The residential grid built for a mill workforce, with consistent older housing at very low prices. The most practical part of the community.

The outskirts and toward the head of the inlet

More separated property with forest and water around it, further from what services exist and further again from the road out.

The Inlet and the Sound

Tahsis Inlet runs south toward Nootka Sound and the open Pacific, which puts the community at the head of a genuinely spectacular piece of coastal water.

Fishing, boating and access to the west coast inlets are the substance of what living here offers. For anyone whose life revolves around a boat, the access from Tahsis is exceptional, and it is much of what draws people this far out.

What the Community Carries

Basic supplies, a school and a health centre serve the community1. That covers essentials and not much beyond them.

Substantial shopping, hospital services and most professional services mean travelling to Gold River and on to Campbell River3. Households here plan around that rather than treating it as an occasional trip, and keeping a well stocked house is ordinary practice.

The Lowest Prices on the Island

Property in Tahsis is among the least expensive on Vancouver Island by a considerable margin. That is a direct function of the access, the services and the size of the buyer pool.

The same factors affect resale. A property bought here should be bought because it suits, not as an investment, and the running costs of remoteness, including fuel, freight, vehicle wear and heating, are real and ongoing.

Working From Tahsis

Local employment is limited. Forestry, marine activity, tourism, education and local services carry what there is, alongside residents who are retired or working remotely.

Connectivity is the practical question for remote work and it is worth confirming specifically for the community and the address rather than assuming. It is the difference between Tahsis being viable and not for a working household.

Rain, Storms and the Winter

This is west side coastal country and the rainfall reflects it. Winter storms are a feature, power interruptions happen, and restoration on a long rural line takes time.

Generators, backup heat and a stocked cupboard are ordinary equipment rather than precautions. Summer is a different community altogether, with boating traffic and visitors, and both versions are worth seeing before committing.

Housing and the Second Move

Housing is largely older detached stock built for a mill workforce, on serviced village lots, alongside some waterfront and more separated property.

Condition varies considerably and the low purchase prices can mask real work needed. Roof, wiring, heating, insulation and moisture management all deserve close inspection in this climate.

There is no smaller or supported housing here. A later move means leaving the community entirely, and given the distance that is a substantial undertaking. It is the single most important thing to think through before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Tahsis

How do you get to Tahsis?

By road from Gold River, on a long and partly unpaved route through forestry country. It is the only land access3, and driving it before buying is strongly advisable.

Is there a hospital in Tahsis?

No. There is a health centre. Hospital services mean travelling to Campbell River, which is a long trip from here1.

Why is Tahsis so cheap?

The access, the limited services and the small pool of buyers. Those same factors affect resale, so a property here should suit rather than be treated as an investment.

What is there to do in Tahsis?

Fishing, boating and access to Nootka Sound and the west coast inlets are the substance of it, along with the forest and mountains around the community.

Can you work remotely from Tahsis?

Some people do. Connectivity is the practical question and it is worth confirming specifically for the community and the address before relying on it.

Is Tahsis a good place to retire?

It depends heavily on health needs, because the nearest hospital is hours away1. For someone healthy, self sufficient and drawn to the water it can work well, and it is worth being honest about how that changes over time.
