Sointula sits on Malcolm Island, a ferry from Port McNeill. It was settled at the start of the last century by Finnish immigrants attempting a co operative community, and the name means place of harmony.
The experiment itself did not last, and a good deal of what it built did. The co op store is still there, the community organises itself in ways that surprise newcomers, and the fishing that sustained the island continues in reduced form.
Small population, limited supply, and prices that reflect the distance. Very little changes hands here in a given year. What does is generally bought by people who have been to the island and understood what it is rather than by anyone comparing listings from a distance.
