Living in Ucluelet

The west coast town that still works for a living.

Ucluelet sits at the southern end of the Pacific Rim peninsula, a working harbour town on the open coast. It has the same ocean, the same trails and the same weather as its better known neighbour, with a fishing fleet, a more year round population and prices that are not quite in the same territory.

What to know before you read further

Ucluelet is a working harbour town. Commercial fishing and marine industry alongside tourism.
The Wild Pacific Trail follows the shoreline. One of the better coastal walks in the province.
It is more year round than Tofino. The population and the economy are less seasonal.
Prices generally sit below Tofino. Though this is still expensive coastal property.
Hospital care means Port Alberni. Over the mountain highway, and not a short trip.
Barkley Sound is on the doorstep. Sheltered water and the Broken Group Islands beyond.

A Town That Works

Ucluelet has a working harbour and a commercial fishing fleet, and that gives the town a base that pure tourism does not provide. Marine industry, processing and the businesses around them operate year round.

The practical result is a more stable community. Fewer businesses close for the season, more of the population is here in January, and the town feels less like it empties out when the visitors leave.

It is also less polished than its neighbour, which most residents regard as a feature. This is a place that looks like it does something for a living rather than a place arranged for photographs.

The two towns share a peninsula and a highway, so choosing between them is about character and price rather than location.

The Wild Pacific Trail runs along the rocky shoreline at the town's edge, past the lighthouse and out along the headlands. It is one of the better coastal walks anywhere in the province and it is at the end of the street.

The coast here is rock and surf rather than the long sand of Long Beach, which gives it a different character. Storm watching in winter is genuinely spectacular from this shoreline.

Barkley Sound sits behind the peninsula, which gives sheltered water, the Broken Group Islands and access that the open coast alone does not. For a boater that combination is unusual.

Housing and the Market

Housing here spans older stock built for a fishing and forestry workforce, newer development aimed at the coastal market, and everything in between. Prices generally sit below Tofino while still being expensive by Island standards.

As on any part of the west coast, the questions are about weather. Roof, cladding, glazing, drainage and moisture management all work harder here than almost anywhere else in the province.

Zoning and any rental or occupancy restrictions matter, since short term accommodation is a significant part of the local market and the rules around it are not uniform.

Services and the Road Out

The town covers everyday needs with groceries, basic services and a health centre. Anything hospital related means the run inland to Port Alberni, which is a serious piece of driving rather than an errand.

Highway 4 is the only road, and it carries everything in and out. Freight costs, winter conditions and occasional closures all follow from that, and they show up in local prices and in how households plan a week.
