Living in Bamfield

Two sides, one inlet, and a boat between them.

Bamfield sits on Barkley Sound at the end of a long gravel road from Port Alberni, and it is split in two by the inlet running through it. The east side has the road. The west side does not, and residents there cross by boat. That single fact is the most important thing about living here.

What to know before you read further

Bamfield is split by an inlet. The east side has road access and the west side does not.
The road in is gravel. A long active logging road from Port Alberni.
The west side is reached by boat. Including for groceries, freight and everything else.
A marine sciences centre operates here. It brings researchers and students to the community.
The West Coast Trail ends nearby. Bamfield is the northern terminus.
Services are minimal. Port Alberni is the practical service centre, a long way off.

The Two Sides and the Water Between

Bamfield is one community and two quite different places to live. The inlet runs through the middle, the east side connects to the road, and the west side connects to nothing except by water.

West side residents cross by boat as a matter of routine. Groceries, freight, visitors, building materials and getting to a vehicle all involve the water. The boardwalk along the west shore is the street.

For anyone considering the west side, that is not a quirk. It is the defining condition of daily life and it does not stop being true in bad weather, at night or in an emergency.

The east side is road connected and therefore a more conventional purchase, though the road itself is its own consideration.

The Road In

The route from Port Alberni is a long active gravel logging road. It is drivable in an ordinary vehicle and it is hard on one, and logging traffic shares it.

Anyone considering Bamfield should drive that road before doing anything else, and preferably in poor weather. Vehicle wear, tyre condition, travel time and what happens when the road is compromised are the real questions.

Water access from Port Alberni is the alternative and it is a genuine one, since a passenger vessel has long served the inlet. Freight and personal travel both use it.

Housing on Both Sides

Property here ranges from conventional homes on the east side through waterfront on both shores to cabins and semi developed parcels. Prices are low by coastal standards and the reasons are access and the very small pool of buyers.

On the west side, everything about a purchase changes. Financing, insurance and resale all behave differently on water access property, and the buyer pool is a fraction of what it would be for the same house on a road.

Building condition matters enormously in this climate. West coast rain, wind and salt work on structures harder than almost anywhere, and deferred maintenance compounds quickly here.

Servicing and Self Sufficiency

Servicing is private and arrangements vary. Water sources, septic systems and in some places power generation all need establishing property by property rather than assumed.

Self sufficiency is a requirement rather than a preference. Backup power, stored supplies and the ability to deal with problems without a tradesperson arriving that afternoon are ordinary parts of living here.
